For Caitie on her 13th Birthday

You dream of flying
afraid of heights but in love
with the weightlessness,
the view from up there.

The air heaves you far
from earth, without a net.
And now, you are free, no roots
or cords, no lines or links --

Just a thirteen-year-old girl
with her arms open to the wind,
eyes smarting with the speed
of flight. Trapeze artist,

your body will swing you
into space, beating gravity
so you can dance with the stars.
My little beauty, grow strong—

find your own voice, own beat.
Call to the like-minded ones
the free-hearted ones
to sing with you.

Jennifer Boire

"Breathless, we flung us on a windy hill, Laughed in the sun, and kissed the lovely grass."
~Rupert Brooke
