Love spins out her strategies old on a checkered field,
You are the fool to rush in bold on a checkered field.

That patch-work of the night was a deceitful comfort,
Just a maze to you was sold on a checkered field.

How easy you were dazzled by lacquer and veneer,
Distracted as the plays unfold on a checkered field.

Why now are you advancing again into a breach,
Changing rank not order you hold on a checkered field?

You think castles were ever meant to be your booty?
What victory do you behold on a checkered field?

What wisdom wades deep in blood beyond the turning point,
Cutting down knights as you are told on a checkered field?

You drew the Saxon prelate’s life on those sacred tiles,
Those dark spots will endure like mould on a checkered field.

With broken shield and sword in your calloused hands,
A chill runs through you sharp and cold on a checkered field.

Gion, your sweating palm grasps but a worthless ring of brass
It was never yours that crown of gold on a checkered field.
