By: A. Jarrell Hayes

I wanted to marry the way
My father did. The way
John Wayne lassoed
The damsels, or James
Bond outwitted the villain.
I wanted Darth Vader's voice
And Yoda's syntax.
Those were my father's favorites.

Manly men, all sweat and
Gym logs -- no steroids here.
No Cosby sweaters or the
Curl of Superman's bang.

To end my marriage as my
Father did, I needed to start
As he and mother began.

When I was ready to propose,
I asked mother for permission
To use her engagement ring.
Keep it in the family; that's how
Dad would've wanted things.
But mother only looked at me
With eyes like melting snowflakes and
Explained how she had pawned the ring
Years ago to cover my father's funeral.
