The sun rather feebly struggled to shine,
Causing fractions of sky to light up.
Flowers pushed heavy heads out of the soil,
Drunk with sweet water from nature's own cup.

The grass sparkled and glimmered - a carpet of emeralds,
Drops of water reclined on silk petals of rose.
Trickling down to the ground as a gentle, cool breeze,
Spread the heady perfume throughout orchard groves.

Birds shook sodden wings and  soft feathered heads,
Rejoicing in the golden, warm sunshine.
Their sweet tunes travelled throughout the air,
As they wove their love nests with dried twigs and twine.

The sun transformed to a ball of orange flame,
Was merciless soon in its sphere of fierce heat.
Shining in all its supreme glory down,
On the freshly-washed world now ready to greet.

Distant lights gladly play the role of man-made moons -
Whose color paints the lumpy surface of the

Snow at night. They are a spotlight
For the ever-swirling flakes of fluff.
Sensuality's fluff.
Sensual

The overused swing pulls me up like a backwards roller coaster
And then releases my rosy face into

The frosty whirling wind. The wind tries to
Turn its fleeting back to me.
Childhood's wind.
Childlike

But it sticks inevitably with me. The pretty blue
Painted front door awaits my smile of a return -

Invisible in the dim of evening.
Only who-knows-what can lead me back.

Back to my flower room -
Back to my perfume -
Back to Femininity -
Back again. Back.

Frosty days and ice-still nights,
Fir trees trimmed with tiny lights,
Sound of sleigh bells in the snow,
That was Christmas long ago.

Tykes on sleds and shouts of glee,
Icy-window filigree,
Sugarplums and candle glow,
Part of Christmas long ago.

Footsteps stealthy on the stair,
Sweet-voiced carols in the air,
Stocking hanging in a row,
Tell of Christmas long ago.

Starry nights so still and blue,
Good friends calling out to you,
Life, so fact, will always slow...
For dreams of Christmas long ago.

Jo Geis

Whence
I came running
to rescue
maidens
and fight
villains.

to me
the desire
to be hero
superseded
everything else
in life.

I wanted
to help others
more than
helping
myself. I
learned
a good
lesson
from that.

I walked
a narrow
walk
a plank
of life
without
spilling
my guts
even once.

Tomorrow
I walk even
grander
I still
rescue maidens
and skewer
villains
but with smile.

My belovéd

I am within a void if not with the inspiration of your soul, without the very essence that is you. I have only recently discovered what true weariness is; a weariness unlike any I have ever endured before. And long before there was you my pen gleamed, with no satisfaction might I add, for the day I would die insufferably. You have gone now, it seems. When the day ceases and I realize how solitude has claimed me, I mourn. With that I bare to you a confession: I often wish my thoughts would leave me...only I am haunted by them which in turn suppresses my heart and feeds on the shadow of my soul. Why belovéd, have we drifted? Enclosed with this letter is a poem I wrote in adoration of you and my heart shall ache to hear you recite it. Oh, if for that moment belovéd I weep or die, forgive me.

Yours faithfully,

Robert.

in my arms
her grievances
flutter as a thousand thoughts
and press upon the grave
of our union

twisting that knife
to drain
such melody
and wishing it
to worthier lovers than we

my every thought
is now
a trail of tears
as she
evokes
a cloudburst

it
overwhelms
our love
leading my heart
to mourn
again
and again
in sync
with a broken lyric

and I long for her

Amidst the kitchen’s floored pots and pans
And the empty boxes of discarded toys.

Through the winding tunnels of
The sitting-room’s turned up cushions
Or in the garden’s Bedouin tents of
Blankets stretched over the dryer’s dowels.

Between the beach’s ditches and dykes,
Palaces and castles and crumbling sand towers
Or around the lumpy works of
Serious budding snow sculptors
And in the Green’s mown grass ring forts…

Maybe playgrounds for the child psychologist
But in all the imperfection,
If that thing is to be named?

Why not the name Divinity?

I

I asked the trees one summer
What they had been thinking of all year.
They wouldn’t say,
But then I heard them wave
And whisper of the ages—
Seasons—
Years, and months, and days—
And countless hours
Of abundant happiness!

II

I like the tales they tell me.
Autumn makes them talk of leaving all,
And yet they stay,
And as they drop their leaves,
They muse for weeks on April—
Thrushes—
Stars and lingering Indian summers—
Rain—
And latent loneliness . . .

III

Their voice is low in winter.
Snow and icy winds are on their minds,
And they withdraw;
But in their winter dreams
You hear how branches sing,
And think of dawn—
The sun in distant countries—
Warmth—
And summer peacefulness.

IV

How grand they are each season—
Often have I seen them stand like kings!
A certain awe
Surrounds their splendid forms,
And so they wait for spring—
For flowers—
Verdant prairies—
Butterflies in May—
And simple loveliness.

V

And then they speak of lovers!
Sudden colors spread their message fast,
And every year
Their many stories bloom,
And nourish noble pages—
Poems—
Gorgeous music—
Heart and mind
With endless youthfulness.

VI

And so we welcome summer . . .
All day long they stand and think and dream,
And all we hear
Is how they wave again
And whisper of the ages—
Seasons—
Years, and months, and days—
And countless hours
Of unending happiness . . .

Life today
Yesterday, when I was young,
reminds me of music I once heard
and I can imagine my life being that song.
When I was young, I had the world spread out for me.

I dreamed of being a spaceman,
a cowboy, an army man, a fighter pilot
maybe even a policeman or a firefighter
and at times I knew I could be President.

Growing a little older, those dreams changed
doctor, teacher, or businessman
started to occupy my plans as I considered my
options and decided to write.

With thoughts of scripts, novels, shorts, and poetry
it was easy to see myself doing that.
Suddenly, I was older
and what I decided turned to how I would survive.

In the end there is no lake house, or hut by the sea
where typewriters and keyboards
keep me up through nights of writing.
Kids, responsibilities, and bills have become life today.

Quite spontaneous
Wasn’t it between us
All of the laughter’s
And All the tears
Felt as a Soft Rain
Switched in to the Acid
Chocking very slowly

Flushing down cheeks
We drank the Poison
Danced in the Flames
You called it a laughter
Was it Salty Sadness ?

Distances unbearable
Then Irreconcilable
Hatred began sooner
Scratched this heart forever

I yelled so aloud
Punished my self
Endlessly though
Couldn’t get satisfied
So much of hatred ?
So much of love ?
Hated you for mocking me
With charming words

Vacuum and the aloofness
Filled in every moment
Too much we missed
In winded channels

Was it the shame
Or was it fear
I could never accept
You in to my life
We drifted apart
Left so much unsaid
Realization came
Little too late
Poignant Destiny
what we had shared
I can never hate you
You are my Beloved

The 80’s
big hair, big bands, metal ballads and parachute pants.
Cable television, just over the horizon
Don Johnson, Bo Derek - never growing old
Whitesnake, Van Halen, Michael – young
Eight tracks, records out to cassette tapes.
Reagan offered hope
Communist offered doom
Amazed by DOS, stunned by Windows
Typewriters to computers.

80’s day
A celebration
Where’s the beef, Like a Virgin, headbands
Big hair is big wigs,
parachute pants costumes
Going retro
Saying, “I like the old stuff.”
Spandex, leg warmers
wondering about music
on MTV.

C. S. Thomas

The clouds part like gaudy stage curtains,
Ruffled and furled whites and greys,
By times edged with silver, by times with gold.

House lights now of slanting sun,
New scene of glistening green and brown,
Blue, blue backdrop of rainwashed sky.

Just as so many a torn chocolate-box lid,
Or jig-saw puzzle missing a piece,
Or crumpled postcard stuffed in a drawer.

What chance to kiss chocolate from your lips?
No part of a cloud is held in your hand,
A sad piece of card with an old address.

When the ocean is stormy
I sail my best
For the calm, peaceful seas
They are not a test
It's when the waves are crashing
And it feels the end is nearing
Those moments make you cherish
When you come to the clearing
It's the bad times that shape us
To who we need to be
To appreciate the good times
This truth sets us free

When autumn wind goes running
It does some magic things.
It gives the shadows dancing shoes,
It gives the bright leaves wings -
When autumn wind goes running.

It curls the bonfire's tail of smoke
And shares a little whispered joke
With cornstalks who delight to prattle,
It turns a seed pod into a rattle -
When autumn wind goes running.
