I had hardened my heart,
Shut out a love I believed was cold to me,
Fool that I was then.
Like a watery sun hanging low in the sky,
Horizon hazed and blurry,
I watched her cry again.
I held her in my arms but did not embrace.
Watched as the pain welled in her eyes
And the tears her pale face redden.
I kissed the tears from her cheeks as lovers do.
Almost, as an actor might but those tears were acid
And the truths revealed in each burn, still burn.
Fergus Carty
